Pat Cummins Set to Play a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

The pace bowler has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's selection chief Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series set to start on the 21st of November in the WACA.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about his chances of being involved.

"We know that the window is narrowing and there are permutations around that, not only his injury, but additional elements," he commented.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a significant role. Hopefully from the opening match. If not, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

He has a history of spinal problems, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from several home seasons in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the contest.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Backup Options

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs in any case. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
